About

Greg McCarthy

Designer and artist. Toronto.

Updated 05/23/26

I’m a designer and artist with over ten years of experience helping people realise ambitious projects. My current practice sits between product and the arts, each side of the work feeding the other.

Who I am

I studied at OCAD University with degrees and credentials in Photography, Drawing & Painting, Graphic Design, and UX/UI. The breadth wasn’t a strategy — it was a way of keeping each part of the work honest by being able to do the next part myself.

Alongside the studio, I keep an active art practice. The work often explores how photography shapes historical narratives. Pieces have been exhibited internationally and are represented in collections including the Library of the National Gallery of Canada.

What I do

UX & product design

From research through to shipped interface. I scope, prototype, and iterate; I bring research into the same room as the design instead of treating it as a phase. Recent work spans AI tooling, mobile prototypes, and design-system build-outs.

Graphic design & brand

Wordmarks, type systems, layout, and the documentation that makes them survive contact with a team. I tend to favour quiet, editorial systems that get out of the way of the product.

Photography & art documentation

Tethered, polarised-light capture for paintings, sculpture, prints, and installations — with deliverables sized to the medium they’ll be reproduced in. I work with artists, galleries, and estates.

Studio practice

An ongoing personal art practice. Sculpture, photography, installation. It’s the part of the work that has no client, and it’s what the rest of the work draws from.

How I work

  • Start with the user, not the output.
  • Use the right tool for the right job.
  • Prototype often, fail early.
  • Keep solid records.

Where I’ve been

Freelance

2016 – present, Toronto

Ongoing freelance practice — design, art documentation, and digital imaging for artists, galleries, and brands. The thread that runs underneath everything below.

Superframe

2022 – present, Toronto

Specialised handling, installation, and documentation of high-value and archival works — for conservators, galleries, and private clients. A close-up education in how artworks actually move through the world.

Jam CRM

2025 – 2026 · 4-month contract, Toronto

Print production manager at a direct-mail CRM agency — wrote and reviewed print specs alongside designers and account teams, enforced brand compliance, print compatibility, and machinability across campaigns, and ran the work-back schedules that kept jobs moving from press date back to brief.

Toronto Image Works

2018 – 2022, Toronto

Digital capture, retouching, and print production for artists, institutions, and publishers. The role that taught me to translate technical workflows into plain language for customers and staff — and where my documentation habit took root.

Pikto

2015 – 2018, Toronto

Print Finishing Department Lead — ran a team of four, developed new products, and refined the workflows behind print finishing, CNC file prep, and large-format imaging. Where I first learned to balance scope, budget, and timelines against the realities of a production floor.
